Seung-yeop Lee was one of the most prolific home run hitters in the Korea Baseball Organization, where he was a five-time MVP, the most in league history. He also was named the best player at his position ten times, a league record. He set single-season home run records for the KBO and Asia (the latter being broken). He then played for eight years in Nippon Pro Baseball before returning to the KBO. He hit 646 homers between the KBO and NPB. Despite 7 years away, he held the KBO career homer record for a period. Lee also shares the mark for most homers in a World Baseball Classic. Not just a home run threat, he was the first KBO player to 2,000 career hits. I-Chung Hong becomes the first CPBL manager to 1,000 wins. Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog (pictured) dies at age 92. Ronel Blanco of the Houston Astros pitches a no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Tiburones de La Guaira win their first ever Caribbean Series title; Ricardo Pinto in named Caribbean Series MVP. Jesús Feliciano, César Tovar, Odell Jones, Francisco Campos and Julian Tavarez are inducted into the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame.

May 16: Today's featured birthday is that of Frank Seminara, who turns 57. 1897 - Attempts to play the first Sunday major league game in Cleveland, OH run afoul of the Blue Laws as the police put a stop to action in the first inning. Frank Robison pays the bail for players and umpire Tim Hurst. 1902 - In the first major league match-up of two deaf-mute players, Billy Hoy faces off against Luther Taylor. Hoy goes 2 for 4 in the contest as his Reds beat the Giants, 5-3. 1948 - Tetsuharu Kawakami of the Yomiuri Giants becomes the first player in Nippon Pro Baseball history to hit two home runs in one inning. 1972 - Greg Luzinski hits the "Liberty Bell" in Veterans Stadium with a shot off of Burt Hooton that travels 500 feet. The Phillies still lose, 8-1, as Rick Monday hits three homers for the Cubs. 1991 - Dave Cochrane, Chuck Jackson and Alonzo Powell (pictured) all hit grand slams for the Calgary Cannons in a 22-7 rout over the Tacoma Tigers.
